So join us now for our next film—and discussion to follow: The Catcher Was a Spy\, the true story of Moe Berg  a Jewish kid from Newark who spoke 18 languages; attended NYU\, Princeton\, Columbia\, and the Sorbonne; played in the major leagues for 15 years and was known as the brainiest guy in baseball; and went on to become one of the most important spies in Europe for the U.S. during World War II. DESCRIPTION:(Adult Education Event)\nJewish Heretics from Elisha Ben Abuya to Sherwin Wine  –  a presentation by Bennett Muraskin \n\n\nBennett has been a regular speaker at our Sunday morning programs for many years and at other Jewish organizations in the area. He was the Adult Education Director for the Jewish Cultural School and Society and is the author of four books on Jewish folklore\, biography\, Yiddish literature\, and Jews in the American labor movement. He has written for several Jewish magazines\, including Jewish Currents\, Outlook\, Humanistic Judaism\, and the NJ Jewish News. \nHeresy in Jewish life\, meaning questioning the authority of the Jewish Scriptures\, Jewish law\, and the rabbinate\, is a time-honored tradition. Beginning with the Hebrew Bible itself\, our speaker will take listeners on a journey through Jewish history\, especially the Haskalah\, or Jewish Enlightenment\, that gave birth to Jewish socialism\, Zionism\, and secular humanism. DESCRIPTION:(Teen Group Event)\nTrip to the Lower East Side 2: America’s Iconic Immigrant Neighborhood \nIn the spring of 2018\, our Teens had a great time in Manhattan touring the Tenement Museum to see how late 19th and early 20th century immigrants lived\, eating lunch at Katz’s Deli\, and visiting several iconic (and food-related) shops on the Lower East Side. DESCRIPTION:(Family Event\, 11:00 am) \nPlease join us for our IL Peretz Community Tu B’Shvat (zero waste) Seder\, Sunday February 2\, 2020 at Rutgers Prep. We will have environmental and social action activities at 10 am followed by Tu B’Shvat Seder at 11 am. Singing\, eating\, and social action celebrating the environment and “The New Year of Trees” – Tu B’Shvat. This is a family event and all are invited to attend! \nPlease RSVP via e-mail to Stephanie Field or through Facebook. \nTu B’Shvat is known as The New Year for Trees. What a wonderful way to honor the true meaning of this holiday by minimizing the amount we throw away when it is over. Environmental issues and ways to make a difference for the planet have never been more important\, and this holiday provides us with an unique opportunity to set a tone for our school\, our students\, and community as a whole. \nThe idea here is to once again create a sustainable Seder\, one in which we really make an effort to reduce our waste\, pay attention to how much we use\, and the ways we can begin to make greater changes for the benefit of the earth. With a little effort and a lot of willingness to be slightly inconvenienced\, our Tu B’Shvat holiday will be one to remember! \nPlease plan to bring one reusable plate\, cup and utensil per person. Cloth napkins\, metal serving spoons\, bowls for each table\, cloth tablecovers\, and small compost buckets are most welcome\, as are any other ideas for reducing our waste. \nIf you would like to bring any of the above in addition to your own place setting\, please email the Sustainable Seder coordinator\,  Stephanie Field. \nLet’s go for minimum waste in 2020!

DESCRIPTION:(Adult Education Event)\nHamilton vs. Jefferson: The Rivalry that Shaped a Nation  –  a presentation by Professor Louis Masur\, Ph.D.\, of Rutgers University \n\n\nOur speaker is a Distinguished Professor in the Depts. of American Studies and History at Rutgers-New Brunswick.  This program is funded by the New Jersey Council for the Humanities\, Public Scholars Program (PSP). \nHamilton is experiencing a well-deserved revival. Often forced to take a back seat to other Founding Fathers\, his vision of America as an economic powerhouse with an energetic government as its engine has found many followers. Hamilton helped get the Constitution ratified\, helped found the Federalist Party\, and served as the first Secretary of the Treasury. An orphan born in the West Indies\, he was like a son to George Washington and perhaps should have been like a brother to Thomas Jefferson. But Jefferson fought bitterly against the Federalists and his election as president ushered in the “revolution of 1800.” Jefferson articulated a different vision from Hamilton’s\, promoting an agrarian democracy built upon geographic expansion—an “empire of liberty\,” he called it. In this PSP session\, participants will learn more about the battle between them how it influenced the new nation. \nOpen to the public; Members – Free; Non-Members – $5

DESCRIPTION:A Vigil for Unity in Highland Park  \n\n\nThe recent wave of anti-Semitic and hate crimes that have roiled the local community and the New Jersey-New York area will be met with a response of solidarity and love\, expressed through a Unity Vigil next week in Highland Park. \nLocal chapters of the Sisterhood of Salaam Shalom will sponsor a vigil on Wednesday\, January 15\, at 7:30 p.m. at the Highland Park High School cafeteria\, 102 N. 5 Avenue\, Highland Park\, NJ (enter through the parking lot in the rear). Members of all faith communities and the public at large are invited to express their opposition to every form of hate-fueled violence and to support the diversity of our community. \nThe Sisterhood of Salaam Shalom is a grassroots organization in the U.S. and Canada dedicated to fighting hatred against Muslims and Jews. The vigil is part of the SoSS’s nationwide “Rise and Respond” campaign to address Islamophobia and anti-Semitism. \nMayor Gayle Brill Mittler will be the keynote speaker\, and representatives of the different faith communities will offer their prayers and thoughts. Those in attendance will have a chance to dialogue and get to know one another. \nThis event is an opportunity to speak out against baseless hatred and to demonstrate\, as so many yard signs proclaim\, that “hate has no home here.”
