SUMMARY:Friday-Night Program: Philip Orenstein\, Painting History
DESCRIPTION:(Adult Education Event)\nPhilip Orenstein: Painting History – a Virtual Discussion \n\n\nIn the summer of 1940\, after the German occupation of Paris\, the French liberal democratic government voted to establish a dictatorship. The facts about this regressive government and its treatment of its Jewish citizens were suppressed and hidden for nearly fifty years. \nIn the span of fifteen years between 1992 and 2007\, Philip Orenstein created seven large paintings called\, “Murals for the Fiftieth Anniversary of the Liberation of Paris\, 1944”. The paintings represent seven events during WW II\, mostly battles that were important to French citizens at the time and\, more specifically\, to France’s Jewish citizens. The paintings were occasioned by the fiftieth anniversary celebration of the liberation of Paris in 1944. Phil’s talk will be about the murals\, how he made them\, how they relate to his interpretation of the celebration of the liberation\, and their relevance to today. \nPhil was born in Paris and is a retired Professor of Art at Rutgers\, New Brunswick; and a long-time member of the Peretz School and Community. \n\n\nAdvance Registration is required. Please Register Here. After registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information on how to join the meeting. \nWe hope to see you there!

SUMMARY:Tu B'Shevat Celebration
DESCRIPTION:(Family Event) \nPlease join us for our IL Peretz Community Tu B’Shevat (zero waste) Seder. We will have environmental and social action activities. Singing\, eating\, and social action celebrating the environment and “The New Year of Trees” – Tu B’Shevat. This is a family event and all are invited to attend! \nPlease RSVP via e-mail to Stephanie Field or through Facebook. \nTu B’Shevat is known as The New Year for Trees. What a wonderful way to honor the true meaning of this holiday by minimizing the amount we throw away when it is over. Environmental issues and ways to make a difference for the planet have never been more important\, and this holiday provides us with a unique opportunity to set a tone for our school\, our students\, and community as a whole. \nThe idea here is to once again create a sustainable Seder\, one in which we really make an effort to reduce our waste\, pay attention to how much we use\, and the ways we can begin to make greater changes for the benefit of the earth. With a little effort and a lot of willingness to be slightly inconvenienced\, our Tu B’Shevat holiday will be one to remember! \nPlease plan to bring one reusable plate\, cup and utensil per person. Cloth napkins\, metal serving spoons\, bowls for each table\, cloth tablecovers\, and small compost buckets are most welcome\, as are any other ideas for reducing our waste. \nIf you would like to bring any of the above in addition to your own place setting\, please email the Sustainable Seder coordinator\,  Stephanie Field. \nLet’s go for minimum waste in 2021!

Dr. Nof Atamna-Ismaeel is on a quest to effect social change through food. The first Muslim Arab to win Israel’s MasterChef\, she founded the A-sham Food Festival in Haifa where Arab and Jewish chefs collaborate on local dishes. As the chefs work side-by-side to transform and preserve traditional recipes\, they draw tens of thousands of food lovers into the city. Breaking Bread follows the chefs of A-Sham on their unique culinary journeys as they celebrate their respective cultural heritages and their passion for food. \nIf you’re not staying for the film\, please plan to pick up your children at 7:30 pm.

DESCRIPTION:(Teen Group Event)\nBackyard Screening & Dinner \nJewish Film Festival Movie: Asia \nIt’s time again for the Rutgers Jewish Film Festival—this year\, all films will be streamed online\, paving the way for a (weather permitting) duo of socially distanced backyard screenings and dinner! Be sure to dress for the weather\, bring folding chairs if you have them\, and don’t forget your masks. \nOn Sunday\, November 8\, at 5:30 pm\, we’ll be screening Asia at the Pestka’s Backyard Theatre\, 2 Elbert Court in Highland Park. Adults and teens are welcome! Tickets and a Tacoria dinner will be provided by Peretz\, with only a $10 contribution per person. Please RSVP to Rob Pestka. \nAsia.  Shira Haas (Unorthodox\, Shtisel) stars in this emotionally powerful drama about Asia and Vika\, Russian immigrants to Israel who are more like sisters than mother and daughter. Young mom Asia hides nothing about her work-hard\, play-hard lifestyle\, and expects the same openness and honesty from her teenage daughter. But Vika inevitably begins to rebel\, seeking privacy and independence\, all while experiencing the onset of a debilitating degenerative disease that makes her increasingly dependent. In her debut film\, Israeli filmmaker Ruthy Pribar candidly explores the challenges of motherhood and the power of love. \nIf you’re not staying for the film\, please plan to pick up your children at 7:30 pm.

SUMMARY:Teen Group: The Catcher Was a Spy
DESCRIPTION:(Teen Group Event)\nThe Catcher Was a Spy: Film & Discussion \nOver the past few years\, the Teen Group has enjoyed a number of films together\, mainly at Rutgers Jewish Film Festival\, our last being Tel Aviv on Fire\, which everyone thought was a terrific movie. So join us now for our next film—and discussion to follow: The Catcher Was a Spy\, the true story of Moe Berg  a Jewish kid from Newark who spoke 18 languages; attended NYU\, Princeton\, Columbia\, and the Sorbonne; played in the major leagues for 15 years and was known as the brainiest guy in baseball; and went on to become one of the most important spies in Europe for the U.S. during World War II. It’s a truly unique story. \nHow will we do it while self-isolating during the COVID-19 pandemic? Let me know ASAP whether you’d like to watch the movie online on Amazon Prime\, Apple TV\, or any other service you have access to\, and Peretz will reimburse you for the cost. We can also provide DVDs to those who don’t have access to an online movie service. Then we’ll get together by Zoom on Saturday\, May 9\, at 5:00 pm to discuss the film and contemplate volunteer work we can do during these times to help our community. \nDon’t miss this event!  Please RSVP to Rob Pestka now!

SUMMARY:Closing Ceremony & Graduation
DESCRIPTION:Closing Ceremony & Graduation \nGraduation is a significant milestone in the lives of IL Peretz school students. If you’ve never been to a graduation\, you will be shocked at how much you learn from the graduates as they present their research projects. Please come to support our graduates. The ceremony starts at 11:00 AM at Rutgers Prep in the Barn Room. All students should arrive at the normal 9:30 start time. \nThe Barn Room is the last one on the right at the end of the building if one walks in through the front hallway. If one enters from the other side\, it will be the first room on the left. (We’re using that room to allow wheelchair access.)
