SUMMARY:Adult Education Program: Susan Sontag
DESCRIPTION:(Adult Education Event)\nSusan Sontag: Cultural Politics and Moral Imperative \n\n\nIn the early 1960s\, Susan Sontag (1933-2004) began publishing critical essays on postwar avant-garde culture.  As time went on\, however\, she turned her attention to exposing incipient fascism\, political scapegoating\, writers in distress\, and to mass victimization – in this last regard\, even putting her life in danger. \nAbout the Speaker\nDr. Barry Seldes (Political Science\, Rutgers)\, retired Professor at Rider University\, is the author of the book “Leonard Bernstein: The Political Life of an American Musician (U California  Press); and “Sensibilities for the New Man\, Politics\, Poetics and Graphics” in Voices of Revolution (ed. Patricia Railing\, MIT and the British Library). His essays are published by\, among others\, Cambridge University Press and the University of Rochester Press.  He has lectured at the Jewish Historical Museum in Amsterdam\, and the American Studies Institute at the University of Alcalá in Madrid.  Professor Seldes accepted an invitation of the Library of Congress to write on Leonard Bernstein’s inaugural premiere conducting the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. \n\n\nPlease email the Program Planning Committee (Claudia Farber\, Joyce Orenstein & Judy Stern) with your suggestions for speakers and/or programs\, or to join our Committee and help plan our upcoming events!

SUMMARY:Adult Education Program: Ross K. Baker
DESCRIPTION:(Adult Education Event)\nThe Rise and Imminent Demise of the Administrative State:\nA Provisional Obituary \n\n\nThe talk will begin with the rudimentary American government that existed in the years before the Civil War and its limited scope and powers\, its overnight expansion to meet the challenge of civil war\, and the postwar incapacity of Congress to deal with the blossoming of modern technology. It will continue with discussion of the innovation of the first “regulatory agency\,” and how it served as the template for the expansion of the scope of the federal government. The talk will end with reflections on the current forced retrenchment under the Trump Administration of what has been called “the administrative state.” Refreshments will be provided. \nAbout the Speaker\nRoss K. Baker\, Professor Emeritus\, Rutgers University\, received his B.A.\, M.A.\, and Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. He was a Research Associate at the Brookings Institution before joining the Rutgers Political Science faculty\, specializing in American Government and U.S. Legislative Politics.  His books include: Friend and Foe in the U.S. Senate; House and Senate; Strangers on a Hill; and Is Bipartisanship Dead?  Baker was a Fulbright Lecturer (Swedish Institute of International Relations in Stockholm)\, and a Visiting Professor (e.g.\, Univ. of Leipzig in 2000).  Prof. Baker served as a consultant to the Democratic caucus of the U.S. House of Representatives\, as a Senior Advisor to Senators Patrick J. Leahy [D-VT] and Chuck Hagel [R-NE]\, and as a  Scholar in Residence in the Office of the Democratic Leader of the U.S. Senate (2008\, 2012\, 2016). \n\n\nPlease email the Program Planning Committee (Claudia Farber\, Joyce Orenstein & Judy Stern) with your suggestions for speakers and/or programs\, or to join our Committee and help plan our upcoming events!

SUMMARY:Adult Education Program: Film and Discussion
DESCRIPTION:(Adult Education Event)\nSODA (Film and Online Discussion) \n\n\nPlease join us for our annual program in which we discuss films shown at the Rutgers Bildner Center Jewish Film Festival. The Program Committee has chosen a film we think you’ll enjoy. Dinner is tentatively scheduled for the nearby Omega diner\, but the dinner location may change depending on the number of people who RSVP. \nAbout the Film\nEva\, a beautiful seamstress\, arrives with her daughter in an Israeli working-class neighborhood in 1954. Shalom Gottlieb\, a former partisan leader and current factory foreman\, falls for Eva\, who offers him a chance at happiness and a life filled with beauty and laughter. But rumors of Eva’s past as a Kapo during the Holocaust shake the community. Shalom’s choice to be with Eva now means not only betraying his family\, but also his fellow partisans and his duty to uncover her secret. Watch the trailer here. \n\nTo join us for the film\, purchase tickets to see it in the theater on Sunday\, November 16 at 5:15 pm. Then email us if you will be joining us for dinner afterwards! \n\nPlease email the Program Planning Committee (Claudia Farber\, Joyce Orenstein & Judy Stern) with your suggestions for speakers and/or programs\, or to join our Committee and help plan our upcoming events!

SUMMARY:Adult Education Program: Film and Discussion
DESCRIPTION:(Adult Education Event)\nScenes from the Divide (In Person Film Screening and Discussion) \n\n\nIn the lead-up to Zohran Mamdani’s election as mayor of New York City\, many of the city’s Jewish leadership\, as well as pundits and politicians\, worked overtime arguing that the candidate’s history of support for Palestine represented a threat to Jews. By inviting viewers into the homes of New Yorkers on both sides of the campaign\, Scenes from the Divide unsettles this familiar story. Rather than a controversy over a particular election or candidate\, the film reveals a fierce battle among American Jews over identity\, history\, and responsibility. Scenes from the Divide explores the story behind the story\, uncovering a fraught struggle within a rapidly transforming community. Watch the trailer here. \n\nThis is a free program. Refreshments will be provided. Family and friends welcome! \n\nPlease email the Program Planning Committee (Claudia Farber\, Joyce Orenstein & Judy Stern) with your suggestions for speakers and/or programs\, or to join our Committee and help plan our upcoming events!
