We have chosen a film that is showing both in the theater and streaming\, and during our online discussion\, we’ll also talk about the other festival films that participants have seen. \nAbout the Film\nThis inspiring documentary chronicles the acclaimed American singer-songwriter Janis Ian’s epic life journey beginning with her Jewish childhood on a chicken farm in New Jersey; her youthful struggle with notoriety following her first hit “Society’s Child” about an interracial love affair; her ascent to fame with the single “At Seventeen” about body shaming; and her pathbreaking album Breaking Silence about her lesbian identity. DESCRIPTION:(Adult Education Event)\nJohn Lewis: From Protest to Politics \n\n\nBorn into poverty in rural Alabama\, John Lewis would become second only to Martin Luther King\, Jr. in his contributions to the Civil Rights Movement. He was a leader of the Nashville sit-in movement\, a Freedom Rider who helped to integrate bus stations in the South\, the youngest speaker at the 1963 March on Washington\, and the chairman of SNCC. \nThe talk will cover Lewis’s life from his youth as a precocious bookworm who sought education and freedom in the Jim Crow era\, through the post-Civil Rights years\, when he headed the Voter Education Project\, which enrolled millions of African American voters across the South\, and the little-known story of his political ascent first locally in Atlanta\, and then as a member of Congress. Tapped to be a part of the Democratic leadership in Congress\, he earned respect on both sides of the aisle for the sacrifices he had made on behalf of nonviolent integration in the South and came to be known as the “conscience of the Congress.” \nAbout the Speaker\nDavid Greenberg is a professor of History and of Journalism & Media Studies at Rutgers University\, New Brunswick\, and a frequent commentator in the national news media on contemporary politics and public affairs. He specializes in American political and cultural history. His book on John Lewis\, has been called “panoramic and richly insightful” by Brent Staples in the New York Times Book Review\, and a book that “sets a new standard” for political biography. Formerly a full-time journalist\, Prof. Greenberg is now a contributing editor to Politico Magazine\, and he has written for Slate\, The New Yorker\, The Atlantic\, The Washington Post\, The New York Times\, The Wall Street Journal\, Foreign Affairs\, Daedalus\, Dissent\, Raritan\, and many other scholarly and popular publications. DESCRIPTION:(Adult Education Event)\nSusan Sontag: Cultural Politics and Moral Imperative \n\n\nIn the early 1960s\, Susan Sontag (1933-2004) began publishing critical essays on postwar avant-garde culture.  As time went on\, however\, she turned her attention to exposing incipient fascism\, political scapegoating\, writers in distress\, and to mass victimization – in this last regard\, even putting her life in danger. \nAbout the Speaker\nDr. Barry Seldes (Political Science\, Rutgers)\, retired Professor at Rider University\, is the author of the book “Leonard Bernstein: The Political Life of an American Musician (U California  Press); and “Sensibilities for the New Man\, Politics\, Poetics and Graphics” in Voices of Revolution (ed. Patricia Railing\, MIT and the British Library). DESCRIPTION:(Adult Education Event)\nThe Rise and Imminent Demise of the Administrative State:\nA Provisional Obituary \n\n\nThe talk will begin with the rudimentary American government that existed in the years before the Civil War and its limited scope and powers\, its overnight expansion to meet the challenge of civil war\, and the postwar incapacity of Congress to deal with the blossoming of modern technology. It will continue with discussion of the innovation of the first “regulatory agency\,” and how it served as the template for the expansion of the scope of the federal government. The talk will end with reflections on the current forced retrenchment under the Trump Administration of what has been called “the administrative state.” Refreshments will be provided. \nAbout the Speaker\nRoss K. Baker\, Professor Emeritus\, Rutgers University\, received his B.A.\, M.A.\, and Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. He was a Research Associate at the Brookings Institution before joining the Rutgers Political Science faculty\, specializing in American Government and U.S. Legislative Politics.  His books include: Friend and Foe in the U.S. Senate; House and Senate; Strangers on a Hill; and Is Bipartisanship Dead?  Baker was a Fulbright Lecturer (Swedish Institute of International Relations in Stockholm)\, and a Visiting Professor (e.g.\, Univ. of Leipzig in 2000).  Prof. Baker served as a consultant to the Democratic caucus of the U.S. House of Representatives\, as a Senior Advisor to Senators Patrick J. Shalom’s choice to be with Eva now means not only betraying his family\, but also his fellow partisans and his duty to uncover her secret.
