DESCRIPTION:(Teen Group Event) \nThe War Refugee Board and America’s Efforts to Save the Jews of Europe\n(A presentation by Historian Dr. Rebecca Erbelding from the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum) \nAmerica has long been criticized for refusing to give harbor to the Jews of Europe as Hitler and the Nazis closed in. Now a lauded Holocaust historian tells the extraordinary story of the War Refugee Board\, President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s little-known effort late in the war to save the Jews who remained. Rebecca Erbelding undertook a decade of research and uncovered new archival materials to tell the story of America’s last-ditch effort to save the Jews of Europe. \nHistorian Dr. Rebecca Erbelding is a curator\, historian and archivist at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum; She served as a historian for the museum’s newest exhibition\, Americans and the Holocaust. Her book Rescue Board: The Untold Story of America’s Efforts to Save the Jews of Europe was published in spring 2018. Erbelding and her work have been profiled in The Washington Post\, The New York Times\, and The New Yorker\, and featured on the History Channel\, NPR\, and other media outlets.\nDr. Erbelding’s presentation & discussion will take place at 7:30 pm on Tuesday\, October 9 at the Douglass Student Center (100 George Street\, New Brunswick). The Teen Group (and any interested parents) will meet for an informal dinner\, compliments of Peretz and catered by Tacoria\, at the Douglass Student Center at 6:30. Transportation from Rutgers Prep to Fritz’s (115 Easton Ave.\, New Brunswick) will be provided by our Teen Group chaperones so parents/grandparents/carpoolers can have a solid block of time to themselves.

DESCRIPTION:(Family Event) \nDinosaur Fossil & Shark Tooth Hunt \nJoin us for this one-of-a-kind adventure! \nBig Brook Preserve\, where we will be searching for fossils and shark teeth\, once was deep under water (hence the shark teeth)…and then it was above water\, at which time it was home to DINOSAURS (hence the dinosaur fossils). This very unique place is open to the public\, but the preserve asks not to dig with large shovels\, so here’s a list of suggested items to bring in order to maximize your findings without ruining the brook for others: \n\nwater shoes\nsifter (the ones that kids use in sandboxes is perfect; colanders will work too but not as well)\nsmall sandbox-type shovels are allowed\, but no regular shovels\nwater bottle (to stay hydrated)\nlunch — which we will all enjoy while inspecting our found treasures!\nbug spray — not sure how prevalent the bugs will be\, but better safe than sorry\n\nThe Preserve is accessed from a small pull-off on the side of the road near the Four JGs Winery. \nThe plan is to search for fossils and shark teeth\, after which we will go to the amazing Colt’s Neck playground-and-sprayground if the kids are interested. If you’d like to join us at sprayground\, you might want to bring along bathing suits for the kids! \nThis event is open to everyone–Peretz school families\, Peretz community members\, as well as friends and families interested in joining us from the larger community.  Please e-mail Lily Borodkin with the number of attendees. From Abraham and Moses arguing with God in the Torah\, to Albert Einstein and Sigmund Freud\, this tradition has been part and parcel of Jewish life. Secular Jews\, in particular\, will learn about “heroes” from Jewish history they can be proud of.

DESCRIPTION:(Adult Education) \nA History of Affinity: Jews\, Blacks and the Exodus Story\, as Exemplified in Negro Spirituals\n(A presentation by Peretz Member Don Stern) \nArtist Don Stern will talk about the importance of the Exodus and other biblical stories in the development of Negro spirituals during the time of slavery. The impact that slaves’ religious and educational backgrounds had on these songs will be covered\, along with a discussion of the hidden meaning of their lyrics. The playing of spirituals by Paul Robeson and other artists will be included. Don has a family connection to American folk song and a lifelong interest in the arts and their appreciation. \nFree for members; a $5 donation is requested from non-members to cover event costs. Refreshments will be served. \n  \nThe IL Peretz Secular Jewish Community’s Adult Education Programs educate our members in engaging ways about Jewish heritage and the world around us.
