Soon after the Nazis sealed the Warsaw Ghetto\, a brave group of resistance fighters compiled and hid some 35\,000 pages of testimonies about life in the ghetto. Gathered over three years\, the documents were hidden underground in milk cans and metal cases. Combining excerpts from this secret archive with interviews and rare footage\, this powerful documentary dramatizes the pen-and-paper rebellion waged by those who risked their lives to ensure that the truth would outlive them. \nThe film will run for 90 minutes\, will be followed by a talk by Dr. Samuel Kassow (Trinity College)\, who wrote the same-named book the film is based on\, with audience Q & A. Finding that social security comes up short\, often underwater on mortgages\, these invisible casualties of the Great Recession have taken to the road by the tens of thousands in late-model RVs\, travel trailers\, and vans\, forming a growing community of nomads: migrant laborers who call themselves “workampers.” \nOn frequently traveled routes between seasonal jobs\, Jessica Bruder meets people from all walks of life: a former professor\, a McDonald’s vice president\, a minister\, a college administrator\, and a motorcycle cop\, among many others―including her irrepressible protagonist\, a onetime cocktail waitress\, Home Depot clerk\, and general contractor named Linda May. \nIn a secondhand vehicle she christens “Van Halen\,” Bruder hits the road to get to know her subjects more intimately. DESCRIPTION:(Family Education) \nHistory of US Immigration Laws And How We Got To Where We Are Today \n(a presentation by immigration lawyer Ana Yngelmo) \nMs. Yngelmo will give a brief overview of the history of our immigration laws\, and how we got to where we are today. The major differences between the immigration policies of previous administrations and the current administration\, both internally and at the border\, will be discussed. She will answer the most frequently asked questions about this issue: “Why don’t they get in line and do it the right way like everyone else?” and “Why didn’t they apply for lawful status after being here for so many years?” \nAna is a licensed NJ attorney who dedicates her practice exclusively to immigration law. Her interest in immigration law grew from her own family’s experience. Born in Cuba\, her family immigrated to the US when she was a child. She grew up in Elizabeth\, attended public schools all her life\, and graduated high school at the top of her class. She obtained her undergrad degree from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and attended Seton Hall Law in Newark where she took advantage of every opportunity to expand her knowledge of immigration law and gain practical experience in the immigration field. She interned at the Immigration Court\, worked at the Immigrant Rights Clinic\, and just two years after graduating from law school\, she opened up her own practice which is now located in Elizabeth.

Some include traditional reading from a Torah and others do not. DESCRIPTION:(Teen Group Event) \nThe War Refugee Board and America’s Efforts to Save the Jews of Europe\n(A presentation by Historian Dr. Rebecca Erbelding from the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum) \nAmerica has long been criticized for refusing to give harbor to the Jews of Europe as Hitler and the Nazis closed in. Now a lauded Holocaust historian tells the extraordinary story of the War Refugee Board\, President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s little-known effort late in the war to save the Jews who remained. Rebecca Erbelding undertook a decade of research and uncovered new archival materials to tell the story of America’s last-ditch effort to save the Jews of Europe. \nHistorian Dr. Rebecca Erbelding is a curator\, historian and archivist at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum; She served as a historian for the museum’s newest exhibition\, Americans and the Holocaust. Her book Rescue Board: The Untold Story of America’s Efforts to Save the Jews of Europe was published in spring 2018. Afterwards\, as a reward for getting up early on a Sunday\, Teen Group volunteers will be treated to lunch afterwards at Fritz’s a wonderful homestyle bakery & restaurant in New Brunswick\, where they’ll be able to trade summer stories. Please let me know if your teen is available this Sunday (September 30) from 9:30 – 11:00 am at Rutgers Prep to help. Lunch will follow from 11:30 am – 12:30 pm. Transportation from Rutgers Prep to Fritz’s (115 Easton Ave.\, New Brunswick) will be provided by our Teen Group chaperones so parents/grandparents/carpoolers can have a solid block of time to themselves.
