This myth—that Communism was a Jewish plot to destroy the nations of Europe—was a paranoid fantasy. And yet fears of a Jewish Bolshevik conspiracy took hold during the Russian Revolution and spread across the continent. In A Specter Haunting Europe\, Paul Hanebrink asks why the myth of Judeo-Bolshevism endured for so long in so many places and what legacy this idea has left for the contemporary far right on both sides of the Atlantic. \nThe IL Peretz Secular Jewish Community’s Adult Education Programs educate our members in engaging ways about Jewish heritage and the world around us.

This is a family event and all are invited and encouraged to attend! \nTu B’Shevat is known as The New Year for Trees. What a wonderful way to honor the true meaning of this holiday by minimizing the amount we throw away when it is over. Environmental issues and ways to make a difference for the planet have never been more important\, and this holiday provides us with a unique opportunity to set a tone for our school\, our students\, and community as a whole. \nThe idea here is to once again create a sustainable Seder\, one in which we really make an effort to reduce our waste\, pay attention to how much we use\, and the ways we can begin to make greater changes for the benefit of the earth. With a little effort and a lot of willingness to be slightly inconvenienced\, our Tu B’Shevat holiday will be one to remember! \nPlease plan to bring one reusable plate\, cup\, and utensil per person. Cloth napkins\, metal serving spoons\, bowls for each table\, cloth table covers\, and small compost buckets are most welcome\, as are any other ideas for reducing our waste. If you would like to bring any of the above in addition to your own place setting\, please email the Sustainable Seder coordinator\,  Stephanie Field. \nLet’s go for minimum waste in 2019!

DESCRIPTION:Urgent Community Meeting Discussing the Future of the Peretz Community and School \nWe have existed as a school and as a thriving community for about 100 years — yes\, we rounded up to make a grander point. We have existed in various forms and in different buildings throughout the years. As of this moment\, we anticipate half of our students will graduate in May and\, unless we receive an unusually large influx of students\, we will have fewer than 10 students next fall. \nThat brings us to the point at hand: we need to come together and discuss how we want to run the school next year. The next school year begins in 9 months\, and any changes we want to make will take time to put in place. We\, the board and several parents\, have discussed various options and will be sharing them on Sunday with you. However\, at this point we have not come up with an amazing alternative and would like to invite everyone—current school families and community members—to brainstorm different ideas and to get your input on whether or not we should remain at Rutgers Prep. \nPlease make every effort to attend this meeting because—as the saying goes—two heads are better than one! Imagine what we can do with 20 very smart and creative heads in the room!

DESCRIPTION:(Adult Education) \nJewish Film Festival Movie: Who Will Write Our History\nfollowed by\nDinner at the Bridge\n \nMeet at the AMC Loews Theater on Route 1 in New Brunswick for the 3:30pm showing of Who Will Write Our History. Soon after the Nazis sealed the Warsaw Ghetto\, a brave group of resistance fighters compiled and hid some 35\,000 pages of testimonies about life in the ghetto. Gathered over three years\, the documents were hidden underground in milk cans and metal cases. Combining excerpts from this secret archive with interviews and rare footage\, this powerful documentary dramatizes the pen-and-paper rebellion waged by those who risked their lives to ensure that the truth would outlive them. \nThe film will run for 90 minutes\, will be followed by a talk by Dr. Samuel Kassow (Trinity College)\, who wrote the same-named book the film is based on\, with audience Q & A. DESCRIPTION:(Family Education) \nBook Discussion – “Nomadland” by Jessica Bruder  \nFrom the beet fields of North Dakota to the National Forest campgrounds of California to Amazon’s CamperForce program in Texas\, employers have discovered a new\, low-cost labor pool\, made up largely of transient older Americans. Finding that social security comes up short\, often underwater on mortgages\, these invisible casualties of the Great Recession have taken to the road by the tens of thousands in late-model RVs\, travel trailers\, and vans\, forming a growing community of nomads: migrant laborers who call themselves “workampers.” \nOn frequently traveled routes between seasonal jobs\, Jessica Bruder meets people from all walks of life: a former professor\, a McDonald’s vice president\, a minister\, a college administrator\, and a motorcycle cop\, among many others―including her irrepressible protagonist\, a onetime cocktail waitress\, Home Depot clerk\, and general contractor named Linda May. \nIn a secondhand vehicle she christens “Van Halen\,” Bruder hits the road to get to know her subjects more intimately.
