DESCRIPTION:(Adult Education) \nThe American Labor Movement – Now and Then\n(A presentation by Ira Mintz\, President Emeritus) \nIra Mintz will show the one-hour award winning documentary entitled The Inheritance\, which chronicles the growth of the labor movement from 1900 to 1964.  He will then discuss the serious current and future attacks on labor unions. \nIra is an attorney for labor unions that represent tens of thousands of New Jersey public employees.  He has litigated several major cases affecting public employees and was previously the lead attorney for New Jersey’s labor relations agency before being fired by the incoming Christie administration. \nThe IL Peretz Secular Jewish Community’s Adult Education Programs educate our members in engaging ways about Jewish heritage and the world around us.

DESCRIPTION:(Teen Group Event) \nDuke Farms: Lunch and Social Action Planning \nThe IL Peretz Secular Jewish Community’s Teen Group is planning several gatherings this spring.  Meet at / Drop off your kids at 12:30 pm at Rutgers Prep.  Following Sunday School\, Teen Group leaders Deb Lancaster and Rob Pestka will take the kids to Duke Farms\, where we will have lunch in the cafe and walk\, bike and/or geocache around the Hillsborough property that serves as a leader in environmental stewardship and sustainability.  We will plan a social action activity that may also serve as the mitzvah project for the Graduating Class.  Most of the afternoon will be spent outdoors\, so dress for the weather! \nAll costs will be supported by Peretz.  Just drop your kids off at Rutgers Prep at 12:30 (or Duke Farms at 1:00)\, and pick them up at Duke Farms at 4:00. \nThe dozen or so teens who have attended our Teen Group events this past fall have really enjoyed them\, and we encourage all our teens and graduating class kids to try one out!  Please RSVP now!

DESCRIPTION:(Adult Education) \nFrom Conflict to Communication\n(A presentation & workshop led by Jenny Psaki) \nJenny Psaki\, a Peretz parent\, MSW\, and Professional Family and Civil Court Mediator\, will lead a presentation and run this workshop.  Effective communication can be rough\, and conflict can be anxiety producing. Communicating with someone with whom you are in high conflict is even tougher.  In this 60-75-minute workshop\, you will learn what causes conflict\, what adds fuel to the fire\, and how to douse it. You will learn how to a) prepare for and conduct difficult conversations at home and at work\, b) use effective communication tools (both verbal and written) which may help you both to truly feel “heard” understood and respected by the other person\, and  c) control your own emotions and behaviors\, so that they don’t hijack the conversation\, add stress to an already tense situation\, and keep you both from saying something you’ll both regret later. \nThis is an interactive workshop. Be prepared for an open discussion and exchange of ideas.  Be willing to try mini role-plays with your fellow participants and be willing to offer up suggestions for your best methods of conflict resolution.  Contact warning:  Conflict can be an emotional and sensitive topic. It can bring back memories of high conflicts past. Each person has a different tolerance level for conflict and disagreement.  Each person has witnessed or participated in “communications-gone-wrong”.   Please be mindful of your own tolerance level for this topic and take care of yourself accordingly.  The Presenter asks that all attendees come with an open mind\, be willing to give each other the ‘benefit of the doubt’\, keep the discussions future-focused and that opinions\, suggestions and creative ideas be given a safe space to heard and respected. \nThe IL Peretz Secular Jewish Community’s Adult Education Programs educate our members in engaging ways about Jewish heritage and the world around us.

DESCRIPTION:(Teen Group Event) \nChanukah Potluck\n&\nSocial Action Video Screening \nThe IL Peretz Secular Jewish Community’s Teen Group is planning several gatherings his fall. Meet at / Drop off your kids at 1:00 pm at the Pestkas (home of Robin ’17 and Harry ’16)\, where we will have a potluck lunch.  Don’t forget to bring your favorite Chanukah dish\, or anything you think your friends will enjoy! \nAfter lunch we will screen a number of short films relating to social-action organizations and projects that have been implemented in the US and around the world.  Some of the films deal with global issues that affect broad swaths of people\, some with local and community-level issues that advocate for individuals or families.  Each film is intended to be followed by discussions that assist the teens in thinking about what they might be interested in pursuing as a group social action project.  Some of the films are intended for more mature children\, so please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.  The video screening will also take place at the Pestkas and will end at 4:00. \nThe dozen or so teens who have attended our Teen Group events this fall have really enjoyed them\, and we encourage all our teens and graduating class kids to try one out!  Please RSVP now\, and don’t forget to let us know what potluck dish you will bring!

DESCRIPTION:(Adult Education) \nJudaism as Counterculture: How Jewish Thought Differs from the American Mainstream\n(A presentation by Lawrence Bush\, author and editor of Jewish Currents) \nLawrence Bush is the author of several books of Jewish fiction and non-fiction including Waiting for God: The Spiritual Explorations of a Reluctant Atheist and Bessie: A Novel of Love and Revolution. He currently edits Jewish Currents\, an independent\, progressive magazine founded in 1946 that promotes Jewish identity as “a counterculture…in many ways antithetical to what drives the the country today.” He is also editor of the daily blog Jewdayo\, discussing events from Jewish life and history on the anniversary of their occurrence. He is the former editor of Reconstruction Today\, the quarterly magazine of the Jewish Reconstructionist movement. His writing has appeared in the New York Times\, Tikkun\, Moment\, Reform Judaism and Mad Magazine. He provided commentary for the Leo Roston classic The Joys of Yiddish. Bush served for more than a decade as speechwriter for Rabbi Alexander Schindler\, late leader of Reformed Judaism in America.  In addition to writing and editing\, he has worked as a puppeteer and school music teacher. \nWe will meet as usual in the Parlor\, where we have coffee\, tea\, and snacks. There is free parking on the street and in the lot behind the church\, reached from Magnolia Street.  The talk is open to Peretz members and the community at large.  Due to the expense of bringing in this speaker\, there will be attendance fees of $5 (Peretz members) and $10 (non-members). \nThe IL Peretz Secular Jewish Community’s Adult Education Programs educate our members in engaging ways about Jewish heritage and the world around us.
