SUMMARY:MLK Day Observance (No Sunday School Class)
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, January 14\, in celebration of Martin Luther King Jr’s birthday\, we will be joining the Workmen’s Circle Midtown school for their day of education and Social Action. \nThe MLKjr Day program will run from 10:30-1:00. It will begin with a full-group gathering for songs and intro\, and then we’ll split up by ages for a learning program for about 30 min. Then we will have a variety of stations for on-site social action activities. One activity that has become a tradition is making sandwiches that volunteers then deliver to a food pantry. \nWe do not have a bus so travel options are as follows: driving independently\, arranging carpooling\, or taking the train. The Workman’s Circle is at 247 West 37th Street\, 5th Floor\, NYC. There will be no regular classes on this date. \nPLEASE\, RSVP to Jeremy Freedman\, our school principal\,  if you will be bringing your child or sending your child with another family. We hope that you will be able to join us for this wonderful event uniting two great Workman’s Circle schools.

DESCRIPTION:(Adult Education) \nBoycott\, Divestment\, Sanctions\n(A presentation by human rights activist Tzvia Thier) \nThe Boycott\, Divestment\, Sanctions (BDS) movement is one of the most controversial and emotional issues facing American Jews.  Come hear a presentation by human rights activist Tzvia Thier on why she supports BDS. \nTzvia Thier  was born in Romania during WW ll and emigrated to Israel when she was six years old. As an adult\, she was a teacher and elementary school principal in Israel.  She spent a decade in Connecticut\, where she taught at a Hebrew school\, and developed curricula for Hadassah and other schools. She then returned to Israel and continued to teach and direct a school until her retirement.  \nIn November 2009\, after a Palestinian family was evicted from their home in Eastern  Jerusalem\, she went there and for the first time spoke to Palestinians. Through this incident\, she came to realize that she was ignorant about many aspects of the reality and history of her country. She subsequently joined with human rights activists to work on behalf of the Palestinian people. \nTzvia Thier now lives in Milltown NJ and shares with many communities what she witnessed and learned. \nTzvia Thier will give her perspective on the Palestinian resistance to the occupation of the West Bank and explain why she supports BDS as a political avenue. DESCRIPTION:(Adult Education) \n Alternative Societies — the Way We Live is Not the Only Way \n(A presentation by Lily Borodkin) \nWe live in a very interesting time – not due to change and not due to diversity — we always had that. We live in an interesting time because for the first time in thousands of years\, we have the ability to connect ourselves to the opposite side of the globe with a stroke of a key on our computers. There are many benefits to that\, but one of the more fascinating aspects of this technology is learning about other people. Other cultures and other societies. This session is going to be dedicated to sharing and discussing alternative societies around the world. Burning Man will be the focus because it is a temporary society created by mostly Americans who for 50 weeks of the year lead “normal” lives\, but transform themselves for the duration of the Burning Man Festival. DESCRIPTION:(Adult Education) \n Rabbis for Human Rights: A Pluralistic Rabbinical Voice of Conscience in Israel \n(a presentation by Rabbi Idit Lev) \nRabbi Idit Lev is the director of the social and economic justice program at Rabbis for Human Rights in Israel. She was active in the “tent protests” in Israel in 2011 and has worked on social justice issues with RHR for more than a decade. Over the years\, she has successfully led RHR’s advocacy efforts at the Knesset\, bringing the voices of women\, people living in poverty\, Arabs\, the disabled and more to the Knesset in the fight to enshrine the Jewish values of justice and equality into Israeli law. DESCRIPTION:(Adult Education) \n The Devil’s Arithmetic and Discussion  \nThe movie is based on Jane Yolen’s historical fiction novel of the same name. It won the National Jewish Book Award for Children’s Literature in 1989. \nHannah Stern (Kirsten Dunst)\, an American-born Jewish adolescent\, is uninterested in the culture\, faith\, and customs of her relatives; however\, Hannah begins to re-evaluate her heritage when she has a supernatural experience that transports her back to a Nazi death camp in 1941. There\, she meets a young girl named Rivkah (Brittany Murphy)\, a fellow captive in the camp. As Rivkah and Hannah struggle to survive in the face of daily atrocities\, they form an unbreakable bond. \nNOTE: As is the case with any Sunday morning or Friday night talk\, the community and its board do not endorse any viewpoint espoused by a presenter. SUMMARY:Friday-Night Program: The Moravian Synagogues Project
DESCRIPTION:(Adult Education) \nThe Moravian Synagogues Project\n(Benjamin T. Berman\, Tenor\, and Paul Conrad\, Piano) \n \nBen is a young singer and conductor with an interest in Czech vocal music\, and a special knowledge of Jewish music.  Recently\, many Jewish sites in Moravia have been restored by grants from both the Czech government and the EU. As the restored synagogues have historical beauty and extraordinary acoustics\, Ben and his colleagues plan to bring music to them.  Along with pianist Paul Conrad\, Ben will treat us to a preview of an upcoming concert tour in Moravia\, and a power-point presentation of their beautiful synagogues.  This special event is free for members of the Peretz community and open to the public for a fee of $5.  Refreshments will be served. \nThe IL Peretz Secular Jewish Community’s Adult Education Programs educate our members in engaging ways about Jewish heritage and the world around us.

The collapse of the Ottoman Empire and the city’s incorporation into Greece in 1912 provoked a major upheaval for Salonica’s Jews. Peretz Community Jewish School\, for children K through 7th grades\, attracts families of diverse structures and backgrounds and meets on Sunday mornings from September through May. The curriculum emphasizes historical and cultural approaches to the study of our Jewishness. Our Jewishness is reflected in our commitment to each other\, to Tikkun Olam\, Hebrew for “repair the world\,” and to make a shenere un bessere velt\, Yiddish for “a more beautiful and better world.” Classes are directed toward understanding our people’s past and enriching our present lives as Jews.
