Postcards with Jewish themes and images were printed in many countries\, including the U.S.\, Germany\, and Poland\, and often featured holiday greetings written in Yiddish and English. DESCRIPTION:Adult Program: “The Truth About Fracking – New Jersey and You”: A presentation by Jim Walsh \n\nJim Walsh is a dedicated political organizer with over ten years experience working in local and national movements to empower communities to work for social\, environmental\, and economic justice. Jim currently serves as the Eastern Region Director for Food & Water Watch. In this capacity\, Jim is overseeing and implementing a regional strategy to ensure the wellbeing of the public triumphs over private interests who profit from the exploitation of the essential resources of food and water. \n\nJim first found his passion for social justice when he started volunteering for the Milwaukee Catholic Workers while earning a degree in Economics from Marquette University. After graduating from Marquette\, he participated in an organizing fellowship with the New Jersey Public Interest Research Group at Rutgers University. He then went on to work for Family Promise\, organizing communities of faith on issues of poverty and homelessness. DESCRIPTION:(Class 4) \nAdult Program: “Spaceships\, Survivors\, and Superheroes: Subverting Narratives in Contemporary Jewish Children’s and Young Adult Literature” \n\nA presentation by Jill Ratzan\, Peretz school librarian. \nEveryone knows the stories: Jews in WW II Europe were as helpless and alone as mice caught in a mousetrap. All Jewish people look the same. Orthodox women are more interested in building a home life than fighting to defend it\, and Jews and Muslims are natural enemies. Right? \nIn a follow-up to a popular talk she gave last year\, Jill Ratzan will examine how the above narratives and many others are upended in recent and upcoming (published 2011-2013) Jewish-themed literature for children and young adults. \nIn this program\, we’ll look at picture books\, fiction\, nonfiction\, biographies\, poetry\, and graphic novels for preschoolers through teenagers that promote new understandings of history\, display emerging definitions of family\, and forge diverse paths toward Jewish identity. To do so\, we’ll travel from medieval Afghanistan to 1930s Baltimore to the far reaches of outer space\, stopping in the present day along the way. \n10:30am at Rutgers Prep.
