SUMMARY:Adult Program:
DESCRIPTION:(Class 15) \nAdult Program:“The Great Latke-Hamentaschen Debate” by Peretz members Rob Pestka and Keith Wailoo \n\nLatkes and Hamentaschen are foods that have all enjoyed for centuries. Only since 1946\, however\, have the sundry merits and drawbacks of both foods been hotly debated in a formal setting.       In the 2012 annual debate sponsored by Princeton University’s Center for Jewish Life\, Peretz parent Keith Wailoo\, Professor in the Department of History and the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University\, was one of the debaters taking up this hot topic. A video recording of this timeless debate will be shown by Peretz parent Rob Pestka\, and Keith Wailoo will moderate the discussion. Come join us for this entertaining program\, and you too will be able to take a side—latkes or hamentaschen? \n\n10:30 AM at Rutgers Prep

SUMMARY:Adult Program
DESCRIPTION:(Class 11) \nAdult Program: ” Substantial and Sincerely: The Religious Freedom Clause\, RIFRA and the Impact of Hobby Lobby” by Giles Davis. \n\nWhile most people are quite familiar with the term “Separation of Church and State\,” to truly understand this principle\, we need to first understand the two Religion Clauses of the First Amendment. \nThis presentation by Peretz parent Giles Davis       will focus on both the Religious Freedom Clause\, including the Supreme Court decisions that established its real meaning\, and The Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RIFRA)\, signed into law by President Clinton. We will take an in-depth look at the controversial “Hobby Lobby” decision and the role of RIFRA in paving the way for that decision\, which had a far reaching impact on a Religious Freedom and has set the stage for chaos in what laws apply to whom. \n  \n10:30 AM at Rutgers Prep.

Before Mae West\, Marilyn Monroe\, Bette Midler\, Madonna\, and Lady Gaga\, Tucker was the first woman to infatuate her audiences with a bold\, bawdy\, and brassy style. Using all of the more than four hundred recently rediscovered personal scrapbooks of the performer known as “the Last of the Red Hot Mamas\,” the film retraces Tucker’s sixty-year show business career. \nAs the only other showing of this film is on Thurs 10/30 at 1 PM\, the Sun show will likely sell out\, so get your tickets in advance at the Rutgers Jewish Film Festival website*; new option is print at home tickets. After the film\, you are invited to travel just north on Route 1 to the Omega Diner to have dinner together and discuss this film and others in the festival. Note that those who want to see the 7 PM film\, “The Green Prince\,” can order and receive our dinner first in order to leave by 6:45 PM.   http://bildnercenter.rutgers.edu/film

SUMMARY:Adult Program
DESCRIPTION:(Class 26) \nAdult Program: A Tikkun Olam Book Discussion Group: \n\n“The Life You Can Save: Acting Now to End World Poverty by Peter Singer” \n\nA presentation by Peretz members Nancy Glazer and Nancy Bernheimer \n\nPeretz parents and community members are invited to read “The Life You Can Save\,” a book by Peter Singer\, Princeton philosopher and professor of bioethics\, and join in a group discussion of the book. The idea that people should feel responsible for preventing poverty and suffering is discussed in this book but\, as Singer says\, is not in itself a controversial notion. Singer goes much farther in this book\, moving from the more familiar argument to the claim that most of us have only scratched the surface of giving and can and should find ways to give more. \n\nThis short\, readable book is available from Amazon for a very reasonable price. Whether you read all or just some of this intriguing book\, we invite you to join Nancy G. and Nancy B.\, who will lead a roundtable discussion and elicit your thoughts about the book and your ideas about “acting now to end world poverty.” \n\n10:30 AM at Rutgers Prep.

SUMMARY:Adult Program
DESCRIPTION:(Class 25) \nAdult Program: “Biblical Laws from a Secular Jewish Social Justice Perspective” \nA presentation by Peretz member Ron Herrmann \nRon will use a secular social justice perspective to examine a few original biblical laws from the Torah. To do that\, he will review the original biblical terms for law\, justice\, judgment and the later rabbincal term: tikkun olam. \nRon states that “The laws in the Torah are very simple and the system to work with them was very simple too. However\, thousands of years of rabbinical tinkering resulted in the laws being understood and applied in a way that may differ from the original intent of those laws. Hopefully\, by reading those original laws again and exercising independent modern personal analysis\, you may see those laws in a very different and fascinating way\, applicable for today’s modern society… and social justice.” \n\n10:30 AM at Rutgers Prep.

SUMMARY:Adult Program
DESCRIPTION:(Class 23) \nAdult Program: Evolution\, Creationism\, and the State of Science Education in America \n\nA presentation by Peretz School Principal Jeremy Freedman \n\nEvolution has been a grand unifying theory in science for 100 years and yet there are groups that are still challenging this idea. These groups have a great influence on the text books and curriculum in our schools. With our children falling behind the rest of the world in science and math\, this is not a trivial issue. What is evolution\, what is the controversy\, why not teach other theories\, why does Texas hold such influence over what is written in our text books? \n\nJeremy Freedman has been a high school science teacher for the past 28 years and has had to face these issues directly. Jeremy will share with us his experiences\, insights\, and ideas.       Come join us for what will be a lively and educational presentation and discussion. \n\n10:30 AM at Rutgers Prep.
