DESCRIPTION:Adult Program:“1934: A Year in the Life of a Jewish Community in Palestine”\, a presentation by Professor Aviva Halamish \n\nThe talk will portray the social and cultural history of this community by focusing on the year 1934\, which best reflects its main characteristics: an immigrant society and a minority group living under foreign rule and in a state of conflict with the neighboring majority. The talk will focus on the impact of the growing numbers of immigrants with a substantial distinct new group\, that of the German-speaking immigrants; the absorption process mainly from an individual point of view; and on social\, professional\, economic and cultural ties with Arabs. \n\nAviva Halamish is Professor of Jewish History at the Open University of Israel\, currently a visiting scholar at the Bildner Center. \n\n8 PM at The Reformed Church of Highland Park\, 19-21 South 2nd Avenue

SUMMARY:Adult Program
DESCRIPTION:(Class 19)\nAdult Program: “Imagination and Judaism” – a presentation by Rabbi Melinda Zalma \nWhy do Jews ask so many questions? Because our central text\, the Torah\, often leaves its reader wondering and asking questions. Since ancient times\, the sages have used their imagination\, grounded in tradition\, to answer the questions and uncover meaning within the text. In this program led by Rabbi Melinda Zalma\, we will explore and build on the sages’ wisdom and use our imagination to find our own meaning and interpretations. \n10:30 AM at Rutgers Prep.

SUMMARY:Adult Program
DESCRIPTION:(Class 17) \nAdult Program: “The Mystery of Easter Island: a Lesson on Sustainability” by Jeremy Freedman \n\nIL Peretz principal\, Jeremy Freedman\, will present a wonderful short documentary and discussion on the environmental issue of sustainability\, one week prior to our Tu B’Shvat (New Year of Trees) Seder. \nWhen Europeans first set foot on Easter Island\, they found evidence of a once thriving culture and a society that built colossal statues. But at the time of European discovery the population was already reduced to about 1000 individuals. Also\, there was a mysterious absence of trees on a tropical island. The mystery of how this thriving culture met its demise will be examined and the important environmental issues that we MUST learn will be discussed. Please join us for this timely and informative presentation. \n\n10:30 AM at Rutgers Prep.

DESCRIPTION:(Class 15) \nAdult Program:“The Great Latke-Hamentaschen Debate” by Peretz members Rob Pestka and Keith Wailoo \n\nLatkes and Hamentaschen are foods that have all enjoyed for centuries. Only since 1946\, however\, have the sundry merits and drawbacks of both foods been hotly debated in a formal setting.       In the 2012 annual debate sponsored by Princeton University’s Center for Jewish Life\, Peretz parent Keith Wailoo\, Professor in the Department of History and the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University\, was one of the debaters taking up this hot topic. SUMMARY:Adult Program
DESCRIPTION:(Class 11) \nAdult Program: ” Substantial and Sincerely: The Religious Freedom Clause\, RIFRA and the Impact of Hobby Lobby” by Giles Davis. \n\nWhile most people are quite familiar with the term “Separation of Church and State\,” to truly understand this principle\, we need to first understand the two Religion Clauses of the First Amendment. \nThis presentation by Peretz parent Giles Davis       will focus on both the Religious Freedom Clause\, including the Supreme Court decisions that established its real meaning\, and The Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RIFRA)\, signed into law by President Clinton. We will take an in-depth look at the controversial “Hobby Lobby” decision and the role of RIFRA in paving the way for that decision\, which had a far reaching impact on a Religious Freedom and has set the stage for chaos in what laws apply to whom. \n  \n10:30 AM at Rutgers Prep.
