SUMMARY:Friday-Night Program: Jewish Adolescent Identity
DESCRIPTION:(Adult Education) \nJewish Adolescent Identity: The Role of the Family\n(A presentation by Professor Maurice J. Elias of Rutgers University) \nAdolescents are a source of many oys and joys for parents.  We will look at what Judaism contributes to the development of a healthy identity in Jewish teenagers—as well as younger children.  Drawing from The Joys and Oys of Parenting:  Wisdom and Insights from the Jewish Tradition\, author and Rutgers Professor of Psychology and contributing faculty in Jewish Studies Maurice Elias will share practical suggestions for small but important changes in family life\, including the special role of Shabbat\, rituals and routines\, and acts of kindness and appreciation. \nMaurice J. Elias\, Ph.D.\, is Professor of Psychology at Rutgers\, Director of the Social-Emotional and Character Development Lab and co-Director of the Academy for Social-Emotional Learning in Schools and Rutgers’ Collaborative Center for Community Based Research and Service.  He writes a social-emotional and character development blog for Edutopia and is a longtime resident of Highland Park and member of the Highland Park Conservative Temple-Congregation Anshe Emeth. \nThe IL Peretz Secular Jewish Community’s Adult Education Programs educate our members in engaging ways about Jewish heritage and the world around us.

SUMMARY:Teen Group: Social Action Program
DESCRIPTION:(Teen Group Event) \nWhat Does Social Justice Activism Mean to Us?\nfollowed by\nLunch at Ramen Nagomi\n \nThe IL Peretz Secular Jewish Community’s Teen Group is planning several gatherings his fall. Meet at / Drop off your kids at 11:00 am at Rutgers Prep\, where teens will participate in a discussion\, led by peer educators from the Workmen’s Circle\, around social justice activism. Questions to be explored will include: \n\nWhat is social justice activism?  Why is it Jewish?\nAm I a Jewish social justice activist?\nHow do I live by my values?\n\nThe goal of this program is to enable our teens to articulate the unique opportunities they have to make the world a more beautiful and better place\, and to help them understand their place in the world and begin to consider how they might be/become a Jewish social justice advocate. \nWe have recruited some parents who will take any kids without cars to lunch at Ramen Nagomi (49 Bayard Street\, New Brunswick)\, where the noodle-icious lunch options will be explained by the Japanese-American Pestka family.  Lunch should end at about 2:30\, at which time you can pick up your kids at the restaurant. \nPlease RSVP as soon as possible to allow us to make the appropriate number of lunch reservations.
