DESCRIPTION:(Adult Education) \nJudaism as Counterculture: How Jewish Thought Differs from the American Mainstream\n(A presentation by Lawrence Bush\, author and editor of Jewish Currents) \nLawrence Bush is the author of several books of Jewish fiction and non-fiction including Waiting for God: The Spiritual Explorations of a Reluctant Atheist and Bessie: A Novel of Love and Revolution. He currently edits Jewish Currents\, an independent\, progressive magazine founded in 1946 that promotes Jewish identity as “a counterculture…in many ways antithetical to what drives the the country today.” He is also editor of the daily blog Jewdayo\, discussing events from Jewish life and history on the anniversary of their occurrence. He is the former editor of Reconstruction Today\, the quarterly magazine of the Jewish Reconstructionist movement. His writing has appeared in the New York Times\, Tikkun\, Moment\, Reform Judaism and Mad Magazine. He provided commentary for the Leo Roston classic The Joys of Yiddish. Bush served for more than a decade as speechwriter for Rabbi Alexander Schindler\, late leader of Reformed Judaism in America.  In addition to writing and editing\, he has worked as a puppeteer and school music teacher. \nWe will meet as usual in the Parlor\, where we have coffee\, tea\, and snacks. There is free parking on the street and in the lot behind the church\, reached from Magnolia Street.  The talk is open to Peretz members and the community at large.  Due to the expense of bringing in this speaker\, there will be attendance fees of $5 (Peretz members) and $10 (non-members). \nThe IL Peretz Secular Jewish Community’s Adult Education Programs educate our members in engaging ways about Jewish heritage and the world around us.

DESCRIPTION:(Teen Group Event) \nChanukah Potluck\n&\nSocial Action Video Screening \nThe IL Peretz Secular Jewish Community’s Teen Group is planning several gatherings his fall. Meet at / Drop off your kids at 1:00 pm at the Pestkas (home of Robin ’17 and Harry ’16)\, where we will have a potluck lunch.  Don’t forget to bring your favorite Chanukah dish\, or anything you think your friends will enjoy! \nAfter lunch we will screen a number of short films relating to social-action organizations and projects that have been implemented in the US and around the world.  Some of the films deal with global issues that affect broad swaths of people\, some with local and community-level issues that advocate for individuals or families.  Each film is intended to be followed by discussions that assist the teens in thinking about what they might be interested in pursuing as a group social action project.  Some of the films are intended for more mature children\, so please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.  The video screening will also take place at the Pestkas and will end at 4:00. \nThe dozen or so teens who have attended our Teen Group events this fall have really enjoyed them\, and we encourage all our teens and graduating class kids to try one out!  Please RSVP now\, and don’t forget to let us know what potluck dish you will bring!
