The collapse of the Ottoman Empire and the city’s incorporation into Greece in 1912 provoked a major upheaval for Salonica’s Jews. SUMMARY:Friday-Night Program: The Moravian Synagogues Project
DESCRIPTION:(Adult Education) \nThe Moravian Synagogues Project\n(Benjamin T. Berman\, Tenor\, and Paul Conrad\, Piano) \n \nBen is a young singer and conductor with an interest in Czech vocal music\, and a special knowledge of Jewish music.  Recently\, many Jewish sites in Moravia have been restored by grants from both the Czech government and the EU. As the restored synagogues have historical beauty and extraordinary acoustics\, Ben and his colleagues plan to bring music to them.  Along with pianist Paul Conrad\, Ben will treat us to a preview of an upcoming concert tour in Moravia\, and a power-point presentation of their beautiful synagogues.  This special event is free for members of the Peretz community and open to the public for a fee of $5.  Refreshments will be served. \nThe IL Peretz Secular Jewish Community’s Adult Education Programs educate our members in engaging ways about Jewish heritage and the world around us.

DESCRIPTION:(Adult Education) \n The Devil’s Arithmetic and Discussion  \nThe movie is based on Jane Yolen’s historical fiction novel of the same name. It won the National Jewish Book Award for Children’s Literature in 1989. \nHannah Stern (Kirsten Dunst)\, an American-born Jewish adolescent\, is uninterested in the culture\, faith\, and customs of her relatives; however\, Hannah begins to re-evaluate her heritage when she has a supernatural experience that transports her back to a Nazi death camp in 1941. There\, she meets a young girl named Rivkah (Brittany Murphy)\, a fellow captive in the camp. As Rivkah and Hannah struggle to survive in the face of daily atrocities\, they form an unbreakable bond. \nNOTE: As is the case with any Sunday morning or Friday night talk\, the community and its board do not endorse any viewpoint espoused by a presenter.
