SUMMARY:Sunday School Class & Tu B'Shevat Celebration
DESCRIPTION:(Family Event\, 11:00 am) \nPlease join us for our IL Peretz Community Tu B’Shvat (zero waste) Seder\, Sunday February 2\, 2020 at Rutgers Prep. We will have environmental and social action activities at 10 am followed by Tu B’Shvat Seder at 11 am. Singing\, eating\, and social action celebrating the environment and “The New Year of Trees” – Tu B’Shvat. This is a family event and all are invited to attend! \nPlease RSVP via e-mail to Stephanie Field or through Facebook. \nTu B’Shvat is known as The New Year for Trees. What a wonderful way to honor the true meaning of this holiday by minimizing the amount we throw away when it is over. Environmental issues and ways to make a difference for the planet have never been more important\, and this holiday provides us with an unique opportunity to set a tone for our school\, our students\, and community as a whole. \nThe idea here is to once again create a sustainable Seder\, one in which we really make an effort to reduce our waste\, pay attention to how much we use\, and the ways we can begin to make greater changes for the benefit of the earth. With a little effort and a lot of willingness to be slightly inconvenienced\, our Tu B’Shvat holiday will be one to remember! \nPlease plan to bring one reusable plate\, cup and utensil per person. Cloth napkins\, metal serving spoons\, bowls for each table\, cloth tablecovers\, and small compost buckets are most welcome\, as are any other ideas for reducing our waste. \nIf you would like to bring any of the above in addition to your own place setting\, please email the Sustainable Seder coordinator\,  Stephanie Field. \nLet’s go for minimum waste in 2020!

SUMMARY:Teen Group: Trip to the Lower East Side
DESCRIPTION:(Teen Group Event)\nTrip to the Lower East Side 2: America’s Iconic Immigrant Neighborhood \nIn the spring of 2018\, our Teens had a great time in Manhattan touring the Tenement Museum to see how late 19th and early 20th century immigrants lived\, eating lunch at Katz’s Deli\, and visiting several iconic (and food-related) shops on the Lower East Side. On Sunday\, February 9\, we plan another visit to Manhattan where we will see the Synagogue and Museum at Eldridge Street\, have a private walking tour of the Jewish Lower East Side\, visit Teen-favorite Economy Candy and other foodie destinations\, and dine at an award-winning ramen restaurant.  Adults are welcome to accompany your children/grandchildren.  Peretz will cover the costs of the museum tour\, walking tour\, and dinner for both adults and children; we ask only for a contribution of $25 per person and that you provide pocket money for any personal purchases. \nDrop-off will be at the Lancaster-Hartwick’s (home of Ben ’16) at 11:00 am; pickup will be at the Lancaster-Hartwick home at 7:30 pm.  Deb Lancaster and Rob Pestka will provide transportation to and from the City.  Based on the numbers\, we may recruit additional chaperones as well.  Please RSVP to Rob Pestka by Friday\, January 24. \n\n11:00  Meet at the Lancaster-Hartwick’s\, 109 Donaldson Street\, Highland Park\n12:45  Synagogue and Museum at Eldridge Street\, guided tour\n1:45    The Pickle Guys\, Russ & Daughters\, Kossar’s Bialys\, Economy Candy\, Yonah Schimmel Knish Bakery\n2:45    Private walking tour of the Jewish Lower East Side\, by Big Onion founder Seth Kamil\n5:00    Prix Fixe Dinner at Shinka Ramen\, award-winning restaurant\n6:30    Depart for home\n7:30    Pickup at the Lancaster-Hartwick’s\, 109 Donaldson Street\, Highland Park\n\nDon’t miss this event!  RSVP now!

DESCRIPTION:(Adult Education Event)\nJewish Heretics from Elisha Ben Abuya to Sherwin Wine  –  a presentation by Bennett Muraskin \n\n\nBennett has been a regular speaker at our Sunday morning programs for many years and at other Jewish organizations in the area. He was the Adult Education Director for the Jewish Cultural School and Society and is the author of four books on Jewish folklore\, biography\, Yiddish literature\, and Jews in the American labor movement. He has written for several Jewish magazines\, including Jewish Currents\, Outlook\, Humanistic Judaism\, and the NJ Jewish News. \nHeresy in Jewish life\, meaning questioning the authority of the Jewish Scriptures\, Jewish law\, and the rabbinate\, is a time-honored tradition. Beginning with the Hebrew Bible itself\, our speaker will take listeners on a journey through Jewish history\, especially the Haskalah\, or Jewish Enlightenment\, that gave birth to Jewish socialism\, Zionism\, and secular humanism. The work of so many of the greatest Jewish writers and activists speaks to heresy as an indispensable part of Jewish tradition. \nOpen to the public; Members – Free; Non-Members – $5
